Ryan M.'s Stanley goes to Alaska

Hello from Homer, Alaska!

Flat Stanley arrived a few days ago in great shape! We spent the weekend driving him around Homer looking at all the sites and sounds of winter in Alaska. He got to visit the inside of a crab pot and sat in a tote full of cod( we freshened him up a bit after so he didn't smell too bad). All of the pictures we took plus a few souvenirs from Homer should be arriving sometime soon. Hope all is well in Minnesota!

Alex's Stanley. part 4

Hello gang,
We had a fun day today in California. We went on a trip to the ocean - do you know which one? I bet Alex knows. We visited a town called San Clemente. First we visited a Farmer's Market where some people have old cars like the one in the picture. Then we walked to the pier. It was a very longway out into the ocean, maybe a block or more. There were many people surfing in the water. The temperature of the water was just 57 degrees, so they had to wear wet suits to stay warm. We were plenty warm - it was over 80 degrees in the air. It was a great day except for one thing. . .
Stanley lost an eye!! Fortunately, we found it and Uncle Jason glued it back on when we got home. Oh I forgot to tell you, He also has only one shoe, but that is ok. It is warm here and he likes going barefoot.
We are heading back to Arizona early in the morning. This might be our last email for a while because we don't have a computer in the condo there. We will still take some pictures and send them to you later.
Have a great week at school.

Alex's Stanley, part 3

Hello again from California,
On Saturday we were kind of lazy. We went shopping and noticed that almost everything in this city (Rancho Santa Margarita) is new. The houses and stores all seem to have been built in the last 10 or 20 years. That is so different from Minneapolis. Our home was built in 1935 - and it is a lot older than these houses. Can anyone figure out how old our house in Minneapolis is?
Stanley did have a chance to wander around town a bit. He really liked the "ginormous" palm trees in the park, and suggested that we play some hide and seek there. Stanley was the winner - he could hide much better than we could.
We found a new kind of plant today too. It is a flower called a Bird of Paradise. Can you imagine why they call it that?

Alex's Stanley, part 2

Hello again,

On Friday, February 26th we packed up the car, had a farewell brunch in Scottsdale, and left for California to visit Alex's Uncle Jason and Aunt Patty. We are only going to be there for the weekend, but we hope that there will be lots of adventures for Stanley.
We crossed a time zone when we got the California. That means that the time here is 2 hours earlier than at home in Minnesota. It is very confusing, but Mr. Knaus will explain it to you. :)
The entire trip to California was 386 miles and took about 6 1/2 hours. Most of the driving was through the desert. It was very dry and lonely looking. In some places you could drive for 30 minutes or more without seeing any people or houses.
We stopped for gas in a little town near Palm Springs California, and Stanley found a super cool car parked next to us. It was bright yellow and had skulls painted all over the sides. Stanley decided he wanted to ride in that car instead of our Honda, but we talked him out of it. Besides, the people who owned the car did not like the way Stanley kept getting his fingerprints all over the shiny paint.
As we neared the larger cities in Southern California, we came to a place where there were windmills as far as you could see. They provide the people of California with clean energy to heat and cool their homes, and not only that they are very exciting to look at. Some day we may have windmill farms in Minnesota too.
We got to Rancho Santa Margarita at about 4:00. It was fun to see Uncle Jason and Aunt Patty, and Stanley was happy to meet the cats, Margaret and KC. KC is shy, but we will try to send a picture of her later. Uncle Jason gave Stanley a few lessons on the guitar, and made us a super duper pizza. It was delicious!

More to come later,

Alex's Stanley, part 1

Hi to Alex and all of Mr. Knaus's class,
We met Stanley out at the mailbox in Scottsdale Arizona on Thursday, February 26th. It was so fun to meet him, and hear about the project your class is doing. We drove all the way here from Minnesota. It was 1645 miles by car and took us 3 days. We drove through these states - Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. See if you can find them on the map. Maybe you can imagine our route.
When Stanley arrived he was glad to see us and Alex's Great Grandma Dorothy and Great Grandpa Jim. He played a game of pool at the clubhouse near our condo. Then he wanted to try and climb one of the cactus by the front door, but the thorns got stuck all over his pants. OUCH
It is beautiful in Arizona and the weather has been like summer in Minnesota - about 75 or 80 degrees. As Stanley learned, there are different kinds of plants that we don't see at home, including lots of varieties of cactus. Some of them are two or three times as tall as a person, in fact they kind of look like a person with too many arms.
There are also lots of fruit trees in Arizona. Stanley found a grapefruit tree right in our front yard. He thought it was great fun to pick them and enjoy the delicious juice. He also thought it was a great place to swing!
For dinner we had Mexican food and sat out on the patio. Stanley was really hungry, and ate all of his enchiladas. There are many Hispanic people who live here. In most of the stores there are people who can speak Spanish.
We will tell you all about our trip to California when we write again.
HAPPY TRAILS,
Grandma Lynne and Grandpa John
